Semi-truck towing in Spokane

In fleet operations, breakdowns rarely follow a script. What starts as a straightforward semi-truck towing job can quickly evolve into a more complex mechanical situation. That’s why you need experts on the job, and a towing partner that understands the mechanics of both recovery and fleet repair.

Recently, FleetEasy Spokane responded to a call near Ritzville, Washington, where a Freightliner semi-truck was reported to have a failed clutch. The customer planned to handle repairs in-house but needed reliable towing to get the unit off the road and into a safe working environment.

What unfolded on-site is a good example of why experience, the right equipment, and strong mechanical knowledge matter in heavy-duty towing.

What We Found On-Site

Upon arrival, our operator began assessing the situation. While the initial report pointed to a clutch failure, early observations suggested the issue might not be so straightforward. The truck still shifted into gear, and a visible fluid leak was observed near the clutch housing. At first, the operator thought it could be a potential slave cylinder failure.

At this stage, we could see that this job required mechanical insight to avoid causing further damage during the tow. Good thing FleetEasy is an expert in both semi-truck towing and on-site fleet repairs!

Complications During Recovery

As the recovery progressed, additional mechanical issues came to light:

    • A damaged brake chamber (axle 4, right-hand side) with a broken emergency spring
    • We couldn’t fully cage the brakes due to the damage
    • Limited onboard fittings prevented air from being plumbed to the truck
    • A worn and out-of-round U-joint that had likely been reused multiple times

To safely tow the unit, our operator had to manually adjust the slack adjuster to free the wheel end. He also caged brakes where possible and had to work around damaged components. Then, he had to remove the driveshaft entirely to prevent further damage to the drivetrain.

The U-joint cap had seized and wouldn’t come out using standard equipment, so our operator used hand tools and his physical strength to release it. As you can see, this wasn’t just a tow! It turned into an on-site fleet repair situation, and we were ready to get the job done.

Safe Transport to Spokane Shop

Once the truck was properly secured and made road-ready, it was transported for further inspection and service coordination. Since it was a bit dicey when we first checked out the truck, our tow operator had to recheck rigging and braking systems throughout the tow. We needed to ensure the unit remained stable despite the damaged parts.
